AT&T says this week’s release of the Open Network Automation Platform (ONAP) code into open source is a call to action for SDN developers to take an active role in the software-centric evolution taking place in the telecom industry.
Chris Rice, ONAP chair and SVP of AT&T Labs, said in a blog post that ONAP puts network developers in a position to drive the development of new services and applications.
How long does it take to merge eight million lines of code from AT&T’s ECOMP framework with the code from the Open-O project, which is also very large?
Now that ECOMP and Open-O have merged into one project under the Linux Foundation — the Open Network Automation Platform (ONAP) — that’s the job the community is facing.

OPEN NETWORKING SUMMIT 2017 (SANTA CLARA, CA) APRIL 5, 2017 — The Open Network Automation Platform (ONAP) Project today announced that its code and documentation are now open to the community for increased collaboration. It also introduced the newly elected officers of the project and welcomed additional members. They include Platinum member Reliance Jio; Silver members Ciena, Microsoft, New H3C Technologies Co., Ltd. and Wind River; and Associate member Open Networking Foundation. All will join the community in working on a shared framework for automation of virtual network functions.
The opening of ONAP code and growth in membership follow the late February announcement of the project’s formation. The ONAP code base is production-ready and in use. Developers are invited to access it at https://git.onap.org/.
“We’re excited to see how developers and others in the industry contribute to the ONAP code,” said Chris Rice, ONAP Chair and Senior Vice President, AT&T Labs. “Today is an important day for ONAP and open networking. Collaboration is key in open source projects and we’re looking forward to the community’s efforts to harden the production-ready code.”
Ciena, H3C, Microsoft, Open Networking Foundation and Wind River join Reliance Jio (see related announcement) as ONAP’s newest members. The global nature of the project will support its mission to provide a neutral platform for operators and vendors working together to foster innovation and avoid fragmentation around software-defined networks (SDN) and network functions virtualization (NFV).
Yachen Wang, ONAP President and Deputy Director of the Network Technology Department at China Mobile Research Institute, commented: “On behalf of ONAP members, I would like to welcome the new members to the team. We anticipate close collaboration that will further the automation of SDN and NFV networks, and will enable all the community to take advantage of the best architectural components and implementation from ONAP.”
The ONAP Governing Board members have elected the following individuals to serve in key roles:

Ciena is the next company to join ONAP, bringing its Blue Planet experience to that open source project, the company will announce today. That makes at least three new members this week, as Reliance Jio and Microsoft were also announced here as ONAP joiners.
At the Open Networking Summit (ONS) this week, AT&T executives talked about a live field trial the company conducted in late March with multiple suppliers where it tested an open source, white box switch carrying customer traffic.
Creating this white box switch was a group effort with the help of several vendors, including Barefoot Networks, Broadcom, Delta Electronics, Edgecore Networks, Intel, and SnapRoute.
This event has proven to be a major coming out party for ONAP, the newly converged open source MANO organization, with a steady drip of news and podium tributes, capped today by the formal announcement of the initial code release, organizational structure and new members. Mere weeks after its formation, the Open Network Automation Platform Project released its code and documentation to the open source community in a bid to generate greater collaboration.
Just over a month ago, the Linux Foundation announced the merger of the ECMOP and Open-O projects to form the new Open Network Automation Project (ONAP). At the ONS 2017 event today, ONAP is now releasing its first code.
The ECOMP project was all based on code developed and used by AT&T. ECOMP, which is an acronym for Enhanced Control, Orchestration, Management and Policy, was only a standalone Linux Foundation project for a few short weeks before merging with Open-O.

ONAP is a collaborative open source project hosted by The Linux Foundation and formed in February through the combination of AT&T’s ECOMP and The Linux Foundation’s Open Orchestrator Project (OPEN-O). ONAP enables software, network and cloud provider companies as well as open source community developers to collaborate in an open ecosystem, encouraging rapid creation of new services and innovation.
ONAP is one of the largest open source networking initiatives, with members including Amdocs, AT&T, Bell Canada, China Mobile, China Telecom, Cisco, Ericsson, GigaSpaces, Huawei, IBM, Intel, Nokia, Orange, Tech Mahindra, VMware, ZTE and other leading network operators, OEMs and platform providers. Jio is the first India-based operator to join ONAP.
ONAP Members Welcome World’s Largest Data Carrier
Reliance Jio, a subsidiary of Reliance Industries Limited, has built a world-class, all-IP network with 4G LTE technology. It is the only network created as a mobile video network from the ground up and supporting voice over LTE technology. Jio has become the largest operator globally in terms of data carried across its nationwide 4G network.
